BURN THE VILLAGE
FEEL THE WARMTH

Nathan Coley

22 June - 31 August 2013

BURN THE VILLAGE, FEEL THE WARMTH is a major exhibition of new and recent work by Nathan Coley, one of Scotland's leading artists.  Coley is known for his commanding and thoughtful sculptures and for site specific installations. His work touches on monumental themes such as the nature of sacred thought and the imperfections of language, often expressed through works that relate to particular environments and architectural structures.  Bold, didactic and unflinching, Coley’s work possesses an elegiac beauty that shifts and turns when viewed against different cultural backdrops.

The exhibition includes photographic works, sculptures and installations as well as an outdoor work responding to the Pier Arts Centre’s unique architectural setting.

Nathan Coley will lead a tour of the exhibition on Saturday 22 June at 4pm.

MODELS OF MIND
Carved Stone Balls from the Islands of Scotland

Jim Pattison

22 June - 31 August 2013

The Centre will also show recent work by Jim Pattison exploring the relationship between art and archaeology. MODELS OF MIND: Carved Stone Balls from the Islands of Scotland is an exhibition of drawings, paintings and prints relating to the extraordinary Neolithic stone carvings found in Orkney and across Scotland.

The exhibition will include the beautifully carved Holm symbol stone, found in the East Mainland parish, on loan from the Orkney Museum. This particular carving was the first of ten examples of symbol stones to be studied at first hand by Pattison for this series of works.  MODELS OF MIND: continues the series of events established through the Symbols in a Landscape project, reflecting the Pier Arts Centre’s interest in art & archaeology.

A programme of workshops, talks and events, designed for people of all ages and ability, will complement both exhibitions.
